Everyday Grace: It's a NOW Thing

2 min read

“This one moment – Now – is the one thing you can never escape from, the one constant factor in your life. No matter what happens, no matter how much your life changes, one thing is certain:

it’s always Now”

Stillness Speaks: Eckhart Tolle

Welcome to your Now. I appreciate that you’re sharing it with me.

Einstein wrote: “All you need lies within you.” Inside each of us rests a deep well of spirit-given, gracious, unconditional love. I believe it came with the territory when we were born. Sometimes we draw that love up to use on ourselves and others; sometimes we leave it . . . waiting. In either case, this gift remains constant, within our every Now.

Maybe you recognize it as a generous response to a surprising conversation . . . the merciful help during a difficult time . . . a loving remark in an unexpected encounter . . . or the pure joy of laughter with friends. Grace, ever-present in our daily lives, waits ready to rescue and reframe whatever finds us hesitating to live our Now time richly and fully.

Poet, Mary Oliver, wisely reminds us: “Don’t Hesitate”

“If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,

Don’t hesitate.

Give in to it.

There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be.

We are not wise, and very often not kind.

And much can never be redeemed.

Still, life has some possibility left.

Perhaps this is its way of fighting back,

that sometimes something happens

better than all the riches or power in the world.

It could be anything,

but very likely you notice it in the instant

when love begins.

Anyway, that’s often the case.

Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid of its plenty.

Joy is not made to be a crumb.”

Give in to it. Your Now is a favorite home for everyday grace.

Dear Jane,

What a beautiful and timely post. As you know, having just lost my best friend, I was struggling but thanks to our conversations, and underscored in this article, I having been taking notice of many "NOW" moments. Those recent NOW moments include talking with you at the most difficult time after months of just you and I passing each other at Starbucks saying "hello;" Barb's great granddaughter getting hired at the memory care just weeks before Barb moved in there: a RISE! part-time server being Barb's nurse on her last day in memory care: the Threshold Singers, you introduced me to, singing to Barb at the hospice on a Sunday when they just so happen to visit, I…

I love "Joy is not made to be a crumb". What a gem to carry with me. This morning I spent many minutes watching a flock of little bush tits in my trees and at my feeder. I had a small, niggling feeling that I should leave and get on with "things", but thankfully I did not. Because when "now" brings joy, it is not made to be a crumb :)

Lisa, I love this response! You're so right! That last line is a gem. There are so many "things" in our Nows and none of them as important as discovering when I just breathe and slow down, there is always a gem to appreciate.

Thank you for your response. Should you ever want to leave your name, I'd love to acknowledge you that way. I do appreciate that grace, Mary Oliver, and I have made at least one of your Now times special in some way. Enjoy today!
